Buying Oil Paintings
Buying and selling Oil Paintings via the internet has many benefits for both the Artist and the Collector. For example the Artist is able to deal direct with the public and is able by means of a website to display a complete range of work, rather than just having a couple of paintings for sale here and there. People are able to then see what the artist is capable of, as both past and present works can be on display.
Artists
For Artists, selling paintings online is a great opportunity to display their work to the world. When deciding on a website make sure your website is set up correctly, many websites are loaded on to the internet without being optimized, which means that they cannot be found using general search terms. If your website cannot be found then no one will be able to see your work. Always include a secure third party server such as Paypal or World Pay to receive online payments. Never except offers of cheques unless you know the person well. I receive fraudulent attempts to purchase my work on a regular basis, the method is always the same , an offer to send a cheque and for me to send the paintings right away. Some of these e-mails can seem genuine so be very careful. Also make sure you state that you comply with the Distance Selling Regulation 2000 (see Terms page on this website for details)
Collectors
For the collector being able to deal direct with the artist has added benefits, often the paintings are more reasonably priced than they would be if purchased from a shop, many shops selling oil paintings expect artists to submit their work on a "sale or return" basis which means that the artist receives no money for the painting until it is sold (stock for free !) also being able to communicate with the artist rather than a shop assistant allows for a more personal approach. There are however several precautions when buying online that it is best to be aware of. Firstly make sure that the artist uses a secure third party server payment system such as Paypal or Worldpay. Secondly make sure that the artist complies with The Distance Selling Regulation 2000 (see the Terms page on this website). This is a guarantee that if you are dissatisfied with the painting you can return it within seven working days and receive a refund.
