Lonely and deserted Islands were the favourite haunt of Pirates in the 18th century hords of gold & precious stones were secretly buried with markers left so on return the treasure could easily be found.Piracy was an extremeley unpredictable business and it is thought that much buried treasure remains undiscovered to this day. Some Islands have been inundated with modern day treasure hunters so much so that many so called treasure islands have banned any further searches.
The painting shows a group of Pirates arriving on Cocus Island in the Indian Ocean, are they here to bury treasure or are they returning to retrieve it?
