The name Crow is probably a mis-translation of the word Apsaroke meaning "Children of the Large Beaked Bird"possibly refering to the Raven rather than the Crow, however Crow became the accepted name.During Custer's campaign against the Plains Indians some of the Crow warriors acted as scouts for him, guiding the seventh cavalry to the great Sioux,Cheyenne and Arapaho village on the Little Bighorn River. The six Crow scouts that day were White Swan, White Man Runs Him, Half Yellow Face, Curly, Hairy Moccasin & Goes Ahead.Curly was just seventeen years of age, all were released before The Battle of the Little Bighorn began as they had only been employed as guides to find the Indian village.
The painting shows Crow scouts working the Little Bighorn River area.
